The history of Aidu
Just over a decade ago, a very different kind of life bustled here. From 1974 to 2012, giant house-sized walking excavators worked here, moving millions of tonnes of earth to extract Estonia's "brown gold".
When mining ended and the powerful water pumps were switched off, nature took over. The former giant trenches quickly filled with crystal-clear groundwater, creating a network of artificial canals more than 30 kilometres long that is completely unique in Estonia, while the heaped-up spoil slowly became covered with vegetation.
